On May 1st, 1978, after five years of legal entanglements and FCC challenges, KFAI-FM went live. The humble 10-watt station, run by the non-profit Fresh Air, Inc and staffed by a group of 100 on and off-air volunteers, began its life in the belfry of the Walker Community Church (3104 16th Ave S, Minneapolis) and served a small broadcast area in the Powderhorn neighborhood.
For its fortieth year on the air, KFAI returns to its roots for a day of broadcasting from the (recently rebuilt) Walker Community United Methodist Church, this time from the church’s sanctuary with a 900-watt stereo/HD signal. Starting at 10am with Nicholas David and Jackson Buck’s East of Here West of Now through Ellen Stanley’s Womenfolk Radio Show, the broadcast day will be open to the public and filled with special guest and well-wishers.
Following the Walker broadcast, festivities will relocate to The Hook and Ladder Theater & Lounge (3010 Minnehaha Ave, Minneapolis) for an evening of live performances (bands listed below) and an exclusive beer release from Clockwerks Brewing – KFAIBock. A Medium bodied smooth and clean easy drinking beer, KFAIBock boasts light toasty aroma, rich Munich malt with a moderate dry, spicy floral finish,7.1%ABV and 30 IBU. This special collaboration with Clockwerks will be available exclusively at the Clockwerks taproom and at select KFAI pop-up locations throughout the summer.
This day of events will be the official kick-off for several KFAI anniversary events throughout 2018, including a “family reunion” at the Nomad World Pub (Minneapolis) (501 Cedar Ave S, Minneapolis) in July, a screening of an early KFAI documentary through the Sound Unseen series and more.
